After transitioning from a destination organization member to a Destinations International employee, Ophélie gained invaluable insights into maximizing membership benefits. Discover her tips to fully engage with your DI membership and discover resources for professional growth and organizational impact.
Reflecting on my first year at Destinations International, transitioning from a member at a destination organization to an employee on the inside, has been incredibly inspiring. I've come to understand all the opportunities I initially missed and am now eager to help current members fully exploit these benefits from the start.
My Biggest Takeaway: One of the most significant revelations I had was discovering that DI membership benefits extend to all employees of a member organization at no additional cost. This is a game-changer, as it gives your entire organization access to a multitude of tools, resources, and growth opportunities. Whether you're a newcomer, an emerging leader, or a seasoned professional, there's something for every level.
Tips:
- Initiate a DI onboarding session/refresher at your next all-staff meeting to get everyone on board and informed of their benefits. Keep your staff directory and organizational chart current with DI to ensure that new team members also get access to these valuable resources.
- Encourage department heads to promote DI access, ensuring that benefits are utilized across the board. Then, reach out to the DI membership team and request our onboarding checklists.
Professional Development/Networking Opportunities
Professional development is crucial for excelling in our industry. At Destinations International, these pillars drive our mission. Before I fully engaged with DI, I often had questions without knowing who to ask. A major member benefit is access to the DI Online Community, which is available to all employees within your organization. This platform allows you to connect with industry peers, access resources like RFPs, job descriptions, speaker directory and participate in complimentary monthly webinars and virtual roundtables. Beyond these offerings, DI also provides certifications and certificate programs through the DI Online Learning Center—all designed to enhance your professional growth.
Tips:
- View Partner Webinars as learning opportunities. These sessions are packed with insights and destination case studies, offering more than just a sales pitch. Learn more about upcoming webinars & educational opportunities.
- Actively participate in DI webinars and roundtables to gain valuable insights from industry experts. View and sign up here for upcoming webinars!
- Expand your professional network by volunteering for DI's Committees and Task Forces and consider enrolling as a mentor or mentee in DI's Mentorship Program to build lasting relationships.
- Encourage emerging leaders at your organization to apply for DI's 30 Under 30 Program.
Advocacy, Research and Destinations Tools
One of the most valuable aspects of DI membership that I wish I had explored earlier is the extensive array of advocacy, research and destination tools available to me. These resources are built on best practices and forward-focused research, designed to enhance the effectiveness of destination organizations and provide actionable strategies for sustainable success.
Tips:
- HR Professionals and CEOs should participate in the Compensation and Benefits Platform to contribute to and benefit from comprehensive industry benchmarks.
- Utilize the Social Impact Assessment Tool to evaluate your organization's inclusivity efforts and identify areas for improvement.
- Regularly explore DI's research resources to stay informed about industry challenges, opportunities, and best practices.
Destinations International In-Person Events
Attending DI events has been one of the most transformative experiences in my professional journey. These events are not just conferences; they are engaging gatherings where industry professionals come together to share knowledge and collectively shape the future of our field. The exchange of ideas at these events is both invigorating and enlightening, fostering a supportive community that values every voice. Note that each event survey is reviewed thoroughly, and all feedback is considered, so I highly recommend that attendees share their feedback.
Tips:
- For first timers: Don’t just wait for others to approach you; take the initiative to introduce yourself to other attendees; ask them: “What tips do you have for a first-timer like me?” This can lead to meaningful interactions, valuable advice and new friendships. Be proactive in starting conversations. Read this Emerging Leaders Guide for additional insights!
- For members: Welcome first-timers, remember your first conference and how you felt, and be the person you wish you had met—extend a helping hand to make new attendees feel welcome. Stay engaged and present, close your laptop, and tune into your growth; maybe that e-mail can wait to be sent during the break.
- For partners: Prioritize adding value over making pitches. Share your expertise and thought leadership to build genuine relationships.
E-Newsletters and the DI Blog
One of the key reasons I highly recommend enrolling everyone on your staff in DI's newsletters is the diverse topics and learning opportunities they offer. Even glancing at a DI email can lead you to discover something new—an insightful strategy, a compelling case study, or a trend that could impact your destination or organization. These newsletters will keep you informed and will even inspire you to reach out to other destinations members.
Tips:
- Encourage staff to subscribe to DI's newsletters and regularly engage with the content to stay aligned with industry best practices.
- Discuss and share insights from the newsletters during team meetings to spark innovative ideas and collaborative solutions.
- Contribute your expertise and experiences by submitting blogs, webinars, or case studies to enrich the DI community: Submit Your Thought Leadership.
