Couldn’t make it to Chicago? This year’s Destinations International Annual Convention was packed with learning, inspiration, and opportunities to connect. Here are the standout moments and member insights.
If you didn’t attend this year’s Destinations International (DI) Annual Conference in Chicago, here’s what you missed: inspiration, connection, and insight at every turn.
The event began with a dynamic opening ceremony that recognized standout industry leaders, including the 2025 “30 Under 30” class, the newest Certified Destination Management Executives (CDMEs), and destinations that received or renewed their Destination Marketing Accreditation Program (DMAP) credentials. The DI Annual Meeting welcomed new Board and Foundation leaders with enthusiastic member support.
One notable highlight was the recognition of Don Welsh’s 10-year anniversary as CEO. Under his leadership, Destinations International has evolved from navigating industry challenges to becoming a globally respected voice for destination organizations. His collaborative, people-first approach and focus on strategic partnerships have reinforced DI’s role as an advocate for the industry.
The opening keynote from humanitarian and former MMA fighter Justin Wren delivered a powerful start. He shared his personal story—from battling childhood bullying and addiction to founding Fight for the Forgotten. His message on resilience and purpose resonated deeply.
Over the next two days, attendees enjoyed nonstop learning opportunities:
1. The Connections

One of the most anticipated moments was the release of the 2025 DI DestinationNEXT Future Study. The standing-room-only session explored fast-evolving trends shaping the future of destination organizations. This research will be a must-read for members focused on strategic planning and relevance.
4. The Power (and Peril) of AI
“AI at the Tipping Point” outlined how artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly. Panelists predicted that within six months, “agentic AI” will reshape workflows across the sector—a mix of promise and challenge for our field. 5. Crisis Response
In “Navigating Crisis,” leaders from Explore Asheville and Visit Pasadena shared firsthand experiences responding to wildfires, floods, and more. Their advice: prioritize empathy, act quickly, and put community first. Download DI’s new Crisis Communications Handbook to prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises with confidence.
6. The Value of Data & Research
Many sessions underscored how essential data is to destination organizations. From measuring economic impact to gauging community sentiment, data empowers smarter storytelling and proves organizational value. Learn more about all the new resources released at Annual Convention.
The closing keynote from Andre Norman brought the conference to a moving conclusion. His journey—from prison to Harvard fellow—reinforced a central theme: transformation is always possible.
