When and How to Recertify

When to Recertify

CDME certification is valid for four (4) years.  A CDME must earn and report a total of 40 continuing education (CE) credits within every four-year recertification cycle to maintain the CDME credential.

The recertification deadline is December 31st, of the fourth year following initial certification.  So, if a CDME is recertifying for the first time, and they earned their credential in the summer, they would in essence have an additional five months in which to earn CE credits.

The recertification deadline is provided when a CDME originally earns the credential and is noted on the CDME Recertification Certificate sent after successful completion of the recertification requirements.

How to Recertify

CDME certification is valid for four (4) years.  A CDME must earn and report a total of 40 continuing education (CE) credits within every four-year recertification cycle to maintain the CDME credential.

To maintain an active certification, a CDME must complete the Recertification Reporting Form and email the form to [email protected], in addition to paying the recertification fee online. Once you have earned and reported all 40 CE credits, the online form will allow you to pay the recertification fee online using a credit card.

Here are the steps to recertify:

  1. Earn 40 recertification credits by December 31 of the year in which you are due to recertify.
  2. Report your credits and complete the recertification form.
  3. Submit the form to [email protected] and pay the recertification fee no later than December 31. You will be provided a link to pay the fee online via email once your form has been approved.
  4. Destinations International staff will review and approve your form.
  5. A Recertification Certificate will be sent within 2-4 weeks of approval.

Guidelines for calculating CE credits can be found here. Visit our Approved CE Activities page to find a list of pre-approved activities eligible for recertification credit.

If you are unable to meet the recertification requirement by the end of your four-year cycle, but have been working toward meeting the requirement by earning at least 20 CE credits, you may request an extension. The maximum extension granted is 12 months. Further extensions will not be granted. In the event you cannot meet the recertification requirements, your certification will lapse. To request an extension, please email [email protected]
