Today we are getting to know our advocacy and data coordinator, Stephanie Auslander.

  • Favorite Destination and why?

New Orleans, Louisiana because of the French influence on the culture, music, and cuisine. The city is uniquely different than all the others in the United States and has such an enriching history. Traveling to New Orleans was an incredible experience as I got to try various new foods, went on new excursions, and enjoyed jazz at preservation hall.

  • In one sentence, what is your job at Destinations International?

I am the advocacy and data coordinator at Destinations International helping our members to amplify their messaging which helps enrich the communities for which they serve.

  • How long have you been with Destinations International?

I have been with Destinations International for just over a week, but I look forward to helping our members reach their goals long-term.

  • What was your first job in the tourism industry?

Post-college I worked as a front office manager for a hotel in downtown Philadelphia. We had guests from all over the world coming into the city for conventions big and small. From there, I worked in the travel industry and then moved over to this new role which focuses on research tools that can be utilized by our members.

  • When you were growing up, what was your dream job?

When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming an actress on either a TV show or a movie. I thought it was exciting that you could play a role that was completely different from your real life.

  • What is your favorite thing about this industry?

My favorite thing about this industry is that it is hospitable by nature and there is a deep sense of community. Members can gather and share ideas, communicate regarding relevant issues, and work together to make improvements to their communities. Additionally, I enjoy the fact that Destination Organizations are always looking to grow and innovate by listening to the ultimate customer, their resident.

  • What is your bucket list vacation?

There are so many places I would like to visit but top on my list is Costa Rica. I really enjoy the variety of activities to explore including hiking, horseback riding, zip-lining, and exploring the beaches. I also really like the way the country seeks to protect its environment including the Osa Peninsula which houses 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. Furthermore, the country is the first of its size to declare carbon neutrality.

  • What is one fact about you that surprises people?

At first, I may appear shy, but I open like a butterfly over time. Also, I love to laugh throughout my day and keep things light. At times when life seems stressful, I like to find joy in my days by smiling at a stranger, walking a dog, or holding the door open for someone at the store.

  • What is your favorite restaurant/meal in the world that you have tried when traveling?

My favorite restaurant is TAO in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. I found the restaurant by accident and found the food and ambiance to be outstanding. I’ve tried dishes there I haven’t found anywhere else such as chicken wing lollipops, lobster wontons, and Chinese five-spice short ribs.

  • What are two truths and a lie?

I love winter sports activities such as ice skating, skiing, and snow-tubing.

I have traveled to over 8 countries including France, Spain, and Israel.

I am an expert in the French Language. (That is a lie although I am actively working to learn French in greater Detail)

  • I am overly competitive about …

I am overly competitive about board games such as Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride. I enjoy that each game is different, various strategies are implemented, and that it’s a fun activity to do with friends.
