Breaking Barriers: Jackson State's Sonic Boom of the South Makes History at the Rose Bowl Parade
Bottom Line:

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South made history as the first HBCU band to perform in the iconic Rose Bowl Parade. Their electrifying showcase celebrated HBCU culture, Mississippi’s heritage, and Black excellence on a global stage, inspiring future generations and elevating the legacy of Jackson State University.

Culture and excellence came together in Pasadena as the Jackson State University’s renowned marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South, one of the nation’s premiere Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), performed during the iconic Rose Bowl Parade. The band’s electrifying performance not only captivated audiences but also marked a monumental moment in the history of both HBCUs and the world-famous parade.

A Legacy of Excellence

Founded in the 1940’s The Sonic Boom of the South has long been celebrated for its precision, energy, and unparalleled showmanship. Known for innovative arrangements, intricate drill routines, and a sound that resonates beyond the football field, the band’s inclusion in the Rose Bowl Parade was a fitting acknowledgment of its legacy. Representing Jackson State University, the Sonic Boom carried the pride and culture of HBCUs onto a national stage, breaking barriers and setting a new standard for representation in major events.

The Road to Pasadena

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South earned a spot in the Rose Bowl Parade thanks to their commitment to excellence and collaboration. Chairman Edward Morales, a longtime admirer of the band, personally delivered their Rose Bowl flag early last year. During his visit, Morales met with Rochelle Hicks, Executive Director of Visit Mississippi, and Rickey Thigpen, Ph.D., President & CEO of Visit Jackson. Both had already envisioned the impact of featuring Mississippi and Jackson in the parade alongside Jackson State. Hicks quietly began working to turn the idea into reality, while Thigpen later raised the possibility during their discussions. By the time Morales visited, plans for a Mississippi float in the 2025 Rose Bowl Parade were well underway.

The application process for securing a float in the Rose Parade is highly competitive. Visit Mississippi’s dedication to promoting the state’s cultural heritage was amplified by the opportunity to pair Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South with a custom float titled "The Birthplace of America’s Music." The float celebrated music legends like B.B. King and Elvis Presley, while native country music group Chapel Hart, previously featured on America’s Got Talent, electrified the stage with performances that captured the essence of Mississippi. This powerful showcase highlighted the state’s rich history and vibrant culture, supporting Mississippi’s mission to boost tourism both nationally and globally.

Performing a medley of crowd favorites, the band’s dynamic sound and synchronized movements drew cheers from the thousands in attendance and millions watching at home. Their performance showcased not only musical excellence but also the cultural significance of HBCUs, inspiring pride and recognition for Black excellence on a global platform.

Rickey Thigpen, CEO of Visit Jackson, expressed his pride in the Sonic Boom’s achievement, stating, “The Sonic Boom’s historic performance in the Rose Bowl Parade is a shining example of the world-class talent and cultural vibrancy that Jackson, Mississippi, brings to the global stage. This moment not only elevates Jackson State University but also highlights the unwavering support of our city and state in celebrating and promoting our educational institutions, especially our state’s Historically Black Colleges & Universities.” The Sonic Boom of the South’s extraordinary performance has helped enlighten authentic experiences and exposure to Black Excellence that Mississippi and its state’s capital personify every day.
