Competing for Time, Attention, and Money

Time is the currency of experiences. Get people to spend more time at and in your destination and they will spend more money there as well. But to do so requires gaining customer attention amidst an increasingly wide array of options available for spending that time.  The choices for how to spend time in physical places have exploded, and new forms of tourism constantly emerge. Moreover, this time-based competition has blurred the boundaries of how and where people spend money across industries. And to top it all off, the smartphone now provides digital access to a host of virtual experiences whenever someone becomes unengaged with any place or event. Drawing from his groundbreaking book, The Experience Economy, Jim Gilmore will share his thoughts on how best to create truly differentiated experiential value. Today, all industries are competing for the same time, attention, and money. This session promises to outline the means to uniquely offer truly differentiated experiences.

Becoming A Community Shared Value: A New Membership Perspective
Details +
Speakers: Dawn Holden, Vice President of Membership Engagement, Destinations International
Matt Ozuna, Advocacy and Data Manager, Destinations International

Each year, a growing number of destination organizations come under government and media scrutiny.  These attacks are getting worse, more frequent, and too often we are our own worst enemy.  Destination organizations must become a shared value within their communities.  Not only must they explain the value of destination promotion, they must overlay that value with community needs and aspirations.  Membership departments are especially adept at incorporating this kind of messaging into their value proposition.  They must be in tune with residents, local business dynamics and tourism stakeholders.  This must-attend session will clearly articulate the role of destination organizations in their communities and how membership departments can leverage their offerings and reaffirm their commitments to the people that matter most.

Stagnant member/partner growth, underutilized benefits, looking to encourage more participation or buy-in?  If you answered yes to any of the questions, it may be time to re-evaluate the benefits you're providing to your members.  From creating subscription-style access to creating a slate of benefits that support the kind of members you want to attract and maintain, making incremental or substantive changes can positively impact your membership growth and retention.  How are you rethinking your membership benefits?  What adjustments are you making to add access, equity and ease to the member experience?  This session will be a facilitated conversation where all can share best practices, use cases and success stories.
