We all know the positive impact our work has on the communities we represent, and our industry is filled with exceptional leaders whose ideas for the future can position their organizations as champions within their destinations. But what you say in defense of those ideas matters, and what people hear matters even more. Words matter in politics, and those words need to be chosen carefully. If we are going to be successful in changing the narrative surrounding our industry in today’s hyper political environment, it starts with talking to stakeholders in a manner that is simple and emotional, and connects their values to your organization and mission.

In this session Destination International will release an updated list of key words as well as examples of how they can be used. Furthermore, this session will highlight a couple destinations that are “Living the Lexicon,” showing real life examples of implementing the New Tourism Lexicon. Through this session, attendees will be able to use the New Tourism Lexicon to connect with their stakeholders and communicate the value of their destination organization as well as becoming involved in how Destinations International continues to refine the Lexicon concept.

Speaker: Jack Johnson, Chief Advocacy Officer, Destinations International

Becoming a Community Shared Asset
Details +

Despite our collective efforts over decades, destination organizations continue to be regularly under attack - like they are stuck in some sort of Groundhog Day existence. Through the use of audits, freedom of information requests and public hearings, destination organizations are being labeled wasteful, poor fiduciaries of public money, bad community investments and examples of corporate welfare. Responses that have worked in the past no longer resonate and yet too many destination organizations continue to fall back solely on their economic development argument. In an era where industry performance measurements and ROI that are not understood or believed too many organizations have no other options in the playbook, no allies beyond the core industry partners and nothing to keep an elected official from leaving our corner. To break the regular attack cycle, perhaps it is time to go back and answer four basic questions in a way that can lead a destination organization to become a shared community value that everyone in a destination can support and embrace.

Speaker: Andreas Weissenborn, Senior Director of Research & Advocacy, Destinations International
